Despite received a standing ovation at the SXSW festival at the beginning of March this year, the film “Monkey Man” faced many setbacks during its production. It was the actor and director who told Dev Patel, who responded to questions from fans on the social network Reddit where he revealed that he even filmed scenes from the film using a cell phone camera.
Dev Patel told fans that directing, acting and producing “Monkey Man” was “the most demanding thing I have ever done in my life” as “every day we faced an absolute catastrophe.”
First, he shared the setbacks of facing the pandemic while recording.
“We were supposed to shoot in India and then COVID hit. I lost my initial production designer and [diretor de fotografia] and the film was basically dead, so we pivoted and went to a small island in Indonesia where we could create a bubble in an empty hotel for the entire crew of almost 500 people. It was a grueling nine months of absolute joy and total chaos,” he reported.
He then said that his filming equipment broke down – and he was unable to replace it.
“Speaking of cameras, most of our equipment broke and we couldn't fly with new stuff, so we literally filmed stuff on my cell phone, we became pros,” he said.
Dev Patel also said that he suffered from a lack of money. There was often no budget for the sets. “One of our producers used his personal credit card to purchase the glass to cover the table tops for one of the main action scenes,” he wrote.
According to the film's official synopsis, the actor lives a fighter , who after years of repressed rage, discovers a way to infiltrate the elite enclave. He soon embarks on an explosive campaign of revenge to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
