“Monkey Phoenix” rescued from ash from a fire in the Pantanal

A newborn capuchin monkey was rescued from the ashes of a fire in the Pantanal, in Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul, last Friday (13).

The survivor was nicknamed “Phoenix,” in reference to the mythological bird that rises from the ashes. After being found, the animal was treated for three days before being transferred to Ayty Hospital in Campo Grande, the state capital.

Because of his age, he needs special attention with bottle feeding every two hours and constant warmth.

The rescue was carried out by teams from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment (Ibama) and Gretap (Cerrado Pantanal Animal Technical Rescue Group).

Under the care of members of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Phoenix is slowly recovering every day.

“Caring for wild animals is extremely delicate and requires a lot of attention. He was found with his umbilical cord still attached, still a baby,” said hospital manager Aline Duarte.

The Government of Mato Grosso do Sul reports that this period of the year is considered the most critical in relation to forest fires, which increase even more due to intense drought and heat and human actions.

Since May, MS has imposed a total ban on burning, with all authorizations suspended. No rural producer, industry or citizen is authorized to carry out burning.
