“Monkey smallpox is a global concern”, says infectious disease specialist Alexandre Naime

In an interview with CNN Alexandre Naime, vice president of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, said that monkeypox is a global concern, contrary to what the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said.

This Saturday, Queiroga told the CNN that the biggest threats posed by the disease are concentrated in Europe.

Naime stated that one cannot underestimate monkeypox.

“It is a global concern. We are frightened by the statement by the Minister of Health saying that it is a localized problem, or that it is in orbit in Europe, giving an underestimation of what is happening. Brazil already has more than 700 reported cases.”

The infectious disease specialist warned of the difficulty in diagnosing the disease, due to the similarity between the symptoms and common skin lesions.

“This is just the end of the spectrum. It is a very difficult disease to diagnose. It often resembles a pimple, a small lesion, a herpes, this makes it difficult for the patient to be suspicious and also, if he comes to seek medical attention, the suspicion of the health team.”

After Queiroga’s statement, the president of the National Council of Health Secretaries, Nésio Fernandes, told CNN that the impacts of the disease cannot be underestimated.
