Monkeypox cases must be reported to authorities within 24 hours

The Ministry of Health added the monkey pox on the National List of Compulsory Notification of Diseases. The decree was published this Thursday (1st), in the Official Gazette. With the inclusion, public and private health services must notify the authorities of new cases of the disease within 24 hours.

According to the latest update from the Ministry of Health, Brazil has 5,037 confirmed cases of the disease, and another 5,391 suspected. On Monday (29), the country had the second confirmed death from monkeypox. The 33-year-old patient was admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The second death was confirmed exactly 1 month after the first death from the disease in the country.

Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) treats the disease as a global public health emergency. The WHO says it believes this measure can mobilize the world to act together.

“We need coordination and solidarity to be able to control monkeypox,” said Tedros Adhanom, director-general of the WHO.

The main form of transmission of the disease is through contact, so the Ministry of Health recommends avoiding contact with people diagnosed or suspected of having the disease. It is also important to wash your hands with soap and water and use alcohol gel before eating or touching your face.

In most cases, monkeypox progresses without complications and symptoms last an average of two to four weeks. In case of skin lesions in the form of blisters or wounds, the Ministry recommends that people seek medical attention at Basic Health Units (UBSs) or Emergency Care Unit (UPA) for evaluation.
