Monkeypox cases surpass 3,400 worldwide, says WHO

More than 3,400 confirmed cases of monkeypox and one death from the disease had been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) as of Wednesday, most of them in Europe.

According to the WHO in an update this Monday (27), since June 17, 1,310 new diagnoses have been reported to the agency, with eight new countries on the list of those affected.

Monkeypox is not yet a global health emergency, as per the WHO’s decision last week, although the body’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said he was deeply concerned about the outbreak.

So far, Brazil has confirmed 17 cases. There are eleven in São Paulo, two in Rio Grande do Sul and four in Rio de Janeiro. Another ten cases are still under investigation.

Of the total number of cases, five would be autochthonous, which means that there was local transmission of the disease. Two of them in Rio de Janeiro and three in São Paulo.
