Monkeypox: prevention requires epidemiological surveillance, says expert

The pediatrician and vice president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, Isabella Ballalai, said, in an interview with CNN Radio that epidemiological surveillance is essential for the prevention of monkeypox.

“Information is the best way to prevent any disease, especially when there is no vaccine, and it is important to know how to recognize [a doença]”, he stated.

According to Ballalai, health professionals are a “key piece” in the fight against monkeypox.

“It is important that the professional understands and he needs to know how to suspect that it may be a case of monkeypox and report it”, he added.

Thus, for the vice president of SBIm, the diagnosis can be made with the disease detection test.

“Epidemiological surveillance will help at this moment of diagnosis to look for contacts to see if there are more cases, looking for a blockade so that there is no further transmission of asymptomatic people, for example.”

Isabella Balallai believes that “there is no need to panic”, but that “prevention at this point is to know that you have had contact with someone and seek help soon to be able to follow up and see whether or not that person will develop monkeypox.”

The initial picture of symptoms “is similar to any other infection”, such as body ache, fever and headache. “With these general symptoms, people are already transmitting it, that’s the challenge with all infectious diseases.”

After this stage, the infected person starts to present red spots that evolve until they become lesions with liquid inside.
