Monster camera Xiaomi 12S Ultra tested live. Tearing apart competitors

Yesterday, July 4, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra was released – the ultimate smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer, replete with advanced features. The main feature of the novelty was the camera system, which is headed by a 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor with optics developed in collaboration with Leica. XDA Developers has already got hold of Xiaomi 12S Ultra and managed to test all the cameras, as well as compare photo capabilities with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro.

Comparison of shots of the same scene with different cameras shows that the 5x zoom produces very sharp images, and the wide-angle camera does not have typical shortcomings, such as loss of many details and color distortion.

natural bokeh effect

The 1-inch sensor provides a very shallow depth of field, making it easy to achieve natural bokeh (without activating the corresponding mode).

When comparing the bokeh effect with competitors, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra looks noticeably stronger.

Both the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max sometimes overexpose shots – although the Xiaomi 12S Ultra has a much larger sensor, this problem does not exist with it. In the examples in a complex scene, a very wide dynamic range is clearly visible (there is significantly more light in the lower part of the picture than competitors). Another plus in favor of Xiaomi 12S Ultra in this comparison is that only in the picture for this model you can make out the picture on the monitor.

Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic color filters

Pictures on Xiaomi 12S Ultra in normal mode seem to be somewhat over-contrasted, the colors seem to be slightly oversaturated. This can be corrected by standard means by activating some Leica color filters.

In night shooting, Xiaomi 12S Ultra leaves no chance for competitors: the pictures are clearer, more illuminated and with less noise. Cherry on the cake – for the above shot, the Xiaomi camera phone did not need a night mode, while both competitors automatically turned it on.
