THE new season of Netflix’s true crime series “Monsters” which began with “Dahmer: An American Cannibal” and premieres on September 19 on streaming, was inspired by us Menendez brothers, young men from the American elite who murdered their parents with twelve shots in 1989.
On August 20, Lyle and Erik Menendez killed Jose and Kitty at the family’s Beverly Hills home in the United States. At the time, they were 21 and 18 years old, respectively, and together they shot the couple more than 12 times with shotguns.
On the night of the crime, after committing the murders, the older brother called emergency services and said that the two had come across their dead parents when they arrived home from a movie session.
With the family money in hand, they enjoyed their time until they were arrested by spending their fortune. Lyle bought a coffee shop and luxury goods, and Erik hired a full-time tennis coach—a sport he aspired to.
Less than a year after the murders, in March 1990, Lyle was arrested, followed by Erik three days later. Neither attempted to deny the crimes during their separate trials in 1995.
The trial was broadcast on television in the United States and brought the case to the attention of the media. The Menendezes were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Even so, their lawyers have repeatedly tried to overturn the sentences to free the brothers.
At trial, Lyle and Erik denied that the crime was committed for financial reasons, but rather because, according to them, they were physically, emotionally and sexually abused during their childhood and adolescence.
