Monte Mor City Hall (SP) decrees public calamity and suspends back to school

The Municipality of Monte Mor, in the interior of São Paulo, declared a situation of public calamity, this Sunday (30), due to heavy rains and suspended the return to school scheduled for next Monday (31).

During the week, the Municipal Executive will inform the new date of return of activities in the municipal education network.

The neighborhoods of Jardim Capuavinha, Jardim Progresso, Jardim São José, Centro, Vila Farid Calil, and Chácaras Pindorama suffered flooding.

Three bridges were swept away by the force of the waters (Chácaras Pindorama, Fazenda Monte Mor, Ponte dos Tempranos). Another three bridges were damaged (Jardim Moreira, Chácaras Miracatu and Chácaras Planalto). Rural roads in the city were also affected.

The heavy rains that hit São Paulo this Sunday caused at least 19 deaths in the following cities, according to information from the state government:

  • Franco da Rocha: 4
  • Francisco Morato: 4
  • Embu das Artes: 3
  • Várzea Paulista: 5
  • Aruja: 1
  • Ribeirão Preto: 1
  • Death in an unidentified location: 1

In an interview with CNN on Sunday night, the mayor of Franco da Rocha, Nivaldo Santos (PSDB), even confirmed eight deaths in the city, information corrected by the city hall around 11 pm to four deaths.

The Municipality of Jaú had also confirmed one death, which was not included in the state government’s accounting.
