The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes assumed, this Tuesday (16), the presidency of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), in place of Edson Fachin. Politicians, ministers and former presidents participate in a ceremony at the Court’s headquarters, in Brasília.
The leaders in the voting intention polls in the presidential race, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL), went to the ceremony. This is the first meeting between political opponents since the pre-candidates were announced.
Former president Michel Temer (MDB) is also present at the event, along with former president Dilma Rousseff (PT). It is the first time they have met since the 2016 impeachment. In addition to them, former presidents José Sarney (MDB) and Fernando Collor (PTB) are also on the TSE plenary.
Increase in membership of the Election Transparency Group
Minister Edson Fachin, then president of the TSE, increased the number of members of the Elections Transparency Commission (CTE), a body aimed at increasing transparency and security in all stages of preparation and holding of elections.
The names were published in the TSE’s Electronic Justice Gazette this Tuesday, as follows: Engels Augusto Muniz, National Councilor, representative of the National Council of the Public Ministry; Bianca Stella Azevedo Barroso, Promoter of Justice, Assistant Member, representative of the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP); João Moreira Pessoa de Azambuja, Assistant Judge of the Presidency, representative of the National Council of Justice (CNJ); and Dayse Starling Motta, Assistant Judge of the Presidency, alternate representative of the National Council of Justice (CNJ).
Start of presidential election campaign
The presidential candidates started the electoral campaign. Part of them took to the streets in cities in the Southeast region, where, according to experts, there should be changes in voters’ voting intentions.
Lula was at the Volkswagen factory in São Bernardo do Campo. The city is the PT’s political birthplace, where he began his career in the ABC metalworkers’ union.
Bolsonaro returned to Juiz de Fora (MG). In 2018, the then candidate was stabbed in the center of the Minas Gerais city. He returned to the place where he was the victim of the assault and addressed supporters.
Ciro Gomes (PDT) took part in a walk at 7 am in the east side of São Paulo. To those present, the pedestrian spoke about the minimum income project, which he named “Eduardo Suplicy”, in honor of the former PT senator.
Rio’s Electoral Attorney asks Daniel Silveira to challenge
The Regional Electoral Attorney of Rio de Janeiro asked that the candidacy of federal deputy Daniel Silveira (PTB) to the Senate be contested. The MPF asks that the Regional Electoral Court of Rio not grant the registration of candidacy and that he be prevented from running for this year’s elections.
The PTB presented his name to the Senate after he received, last year, a pardon from President Jair Bolsonaro after being sentenced by the STF to eight years and nine months of imprisonment. The penalty would be in an initial closed regime, for crimes of threat to the Democratic State of Law and coercion in the course of the process.
US tests long-range nuclear missile
The United States Air Force has tested a nuclear-capable unarmed long-range missile, according to the Air Force’s Global Strike Command.
The unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, equipped with a test re-entry vehicle, was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, and traveled 6,700 km to a test field near the Marshall Islands.
