Germany is the biggest obstacle to imposing tougher sanctions on Russia in the European Union, Polish Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki stressed on Monday, adding that it is not Viktor Orban’s Hungary that is “blocking” them.
The Polish prime minister’s comments come shortly after the announcement of the victory of the conservative right-wing Fidesz party Viktor Obran in the parliamentary elections in Hungary on Sunday, despite criticism from the Hungarian government for taking a “soft” stance against the Russian attack on Ukraine.
“We have to understand that, no matter how everyone approaches Hungary, this is their fourth consecutive victory and we have to respect the democratic elections … it is Germany that is the biggest obstacle to sanctions. Hungary is in favor of sanctions.” , said Mr. Morawiecki, as broadcast by Reuters.
