More oil could be released if needed, says agency director general

The director general of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, said on Thursday (5) that if more oil is needed, “we can release more” in the wake of rising energy prices. According to him, only a part of the oil stocks of the nations of the group was released, equivalent to 9% of the total.

However, Birol highlighted, during the event “The State of the Union 2022”, that demand-side solutions are also important in the face of rising prices in the energy sector, especially in Europe.

According to the director, there are several changes happening in the energy market today, as well as risks. “The current crisis could be a turning point and an opportunity to boost investment in research and clean technologies”, he pondered.

Gas in Europe in winter

Birol said he still does not consider that Europe “will have problems” in its gas supply in the next local winter.

Also present at the same event, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said the bloc intends to present a plan in the coming weeks for a major overhaul of the energy sector.
