More people entered Ukraine from Poland on Friday and Saturday than the number who crossed the border in the opposite direction, according to the Polish Border Guard, for the first time since Russia launched its invasion on Feb. .
The Polish border agency recorded 22,000 people crossing into Ukraine from Poland on Saturday, with 19,200 people traveling in the other direction.
As of Friday, the agency recorded 25,100 people entering Ukraine and 24,400 people traveling to Poland. Some of those entering and leaving Ukraine are aid workers who frequently cross the border.
“We are neighbors of Ukraine not only literally, but also in the sense of common history and understanding of the situation,” Polish President Andrej Duda said on Wednesday.
Some context: More than 2.7 million refugees have fled from Ukraine to Poland since the start of the Russian invasion, more than any other country.
As the focus of Russia’s war shifted to eastern Ukraine, some of those who fled to Poland and other neighboring countries returned to areas recaptured by Ukrainian forces.
