Russian forces have already lost more lives in Ukraine than in four years in Chechnya, a Russian soldier said in an audio clip intercepted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
THE CNN did not verify the authenticity of the audio. The SBU did not provide further details about the soldier recorded in the file or how he was intercepted.
In the audio, the Russian soldier expressed displeasure that elite members of RosGvardia, Putin’s National Guard, and Omon, the Special Police Force, had left Ukraine.
“They are unnecessary. They’re coming back because they’re complaining about not wanting to continue,” he says. “All these special forces fighters that we had, they all retreated, fled to Russia and refused to continue,” the soldier said.
“Even elite enemy units cannot withstand pressure from Ukrainian defenders,” the SBU said in a statement on social media.
The exact number of Russian soldiers who were killed in Ukraine remains unclear. NATO officials in March said more than 15,000 had died in the fighting.
The Russian government does not provide updates. However, in mid-March, the Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda published – and later removed – a report by the Russian Defense Ministry with the record of 9,861 deaths of the country’s Armed Forces in the war.
