More than 1.3 million refugees left Ukraine after Russian invasion, says UN

Some 1,368,864 refugees have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, according to information from the United Nations (UN).

Seven days later, a million people had already left Ukraine after the start of the war in search of shelter in neighboring countries.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told Reuters in a telephone interview that “this is the fastest-moving refugee crisis we have seen in Europe since the end of the Second World War.”

The UN says the data is compiled from multiple sources. And while every effort has been made to ensure that all statistical information is verified, the numbers for some arrivals represent an estimate.

The information that arrives through the sources is carried out on a continuous basis. And therefore, changes may occur in the numbers, including retroactively, according to the organization.

  • Hungary (157,004)
  • Moldova (103,254)
  • Slovakia (101,529)
  • Romania (63,192)
  • Russia (53,300)
  • Belarus (406)
  • Other European countries (113,876)

Also according to the UN, 96,000 people moved to the Russian Federation from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions between February 18 and 23.

Grandi also wrote on social media that “for many more millions inside Ukraine it is time to silence the guns so that life-saving humanitarian assistance can be provided”.

US asks for humanitarian aid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau in the Polish city of Rzeszów.

In a statement after the meeting, Blinken.said the US has asked Congress for $2.75 billion for humanitarian action targeting Ukrainian refugees.
