More than 1.5 million people fled Ukraine because of war, says UN

More than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed the border into neighboring countries in the last 10 days, UN refugee agency commissioner Filippo Grandi said on Sunday.

In a Twitter post, Grandi called it “the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II”.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Interior Ministry told CNN that nearly 38,000 people have arrived in the country of Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.

The German Federal Police had registered 37,786 refugees from the war-torn country as of Sunday, an Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN.

However, given the absence of border checks between Poland and Germany, the actual number of people arriving could be significantly higher, the ministry said.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that Germany will welcome refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, regardless of their nationality.

“We want to save lives. It does not depend on the passport,” Faeser told the German newspaper.

The reopening of humanitarian corridors for the departure of civilians is scheduled for this Sunday (6th). The corridors were deactivated on Saturday (5) due to the breach of the ceasefire by Russia, accused Ukraine.

Also on Sunday, a civilian evacuation post was hit by gunfire near Kiev. There is still no information on injuries. According to the UN (United Nations), more than 1.5 million people have already left Ukraine for neighboring countries.

Faced with the exchange of accusations about a ceasefire to allow the evacuation of civilians, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday (6) that attacks on hospitals were carried out in Ukraine.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the military offensives on health centers had “caused several deaths and injuries”. The organization also said it was investigating other attacks on hospitals in the region.

“Attacks on health facilities or workers violate medical neutrality and are violations of international humanitarian law,” said the WHO director-general.

In his social media post, however, Tedros did not mention Russia by name, which has been carrying out an invasion of Ukraine for 11 days.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, which is the guarantor of the evacuation of civilians with Russia’s ceasefire against Ukraine, reported that the evacuation of Mariupol and Volnovakha people, both in Ukraine, did not start on Saturday (5), as had been was initially announced, because of the conflict.

Ukraine accuses Russia of violating the ceasefire and announced the postponement of the withdrawal of civilians from Mariupol.

The Russian Defense Ministry alleges that “Russian forces were attacked after establishing humanitarian corridors” and accused “Ukrainian nationalists” of preventing the evacuation of civilians.
