More than 10,000 Haitians fled gang attacks in the last week, says UN

More than 10,000 people have been internally displaced in Haiti over the past week as armed gangs operating in and around the capital Port-au-Prince intensify attacks in areas they do not yet control, according to estimates from the UN immigration agency on Thursday. fair (24).

The agency had said in early September that more than 700,000 people were internally displaced in the Caribbean country, almost double the number recorded six months earlier.

Over the past week, gangs have intensified attacks in several cities near the capital, where much of the municipality and its suburbs are under the control of several violent armed groups united under a common alliance known as Viv Ansanm.

The conflict is causing hunger among some of the population, as gangs seize agricultural land and block transport routes, while people are forced to flee their homes – often to makeshift camps – and can no longer depend on a stable income to buy food.

Although the UN has authorized an international force to help the Haitian police regain control, the mission has been under-resourced and produced few results.

Haiti’s leadership requested that the force be converted into a formal peacekeeping mission to increase resources, a move that was blocked last month by China and Russia.
