More than 1,200 agents will work on New Year's Eve in Copacabana

More than 1,200 agents will participate in the urban planning and traffic scheme during New Year's Eve 2023/24, in Copacabana, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The scheme was set up to support police forces and ensure safety for anyone attending the fireworks display.

According to the Public Order Secretariat (Seop) and the Municipal Guard (GM-Rio), the staff will work in shifts, from 7am on December 31st until January 1st.

Of the total number of agents, 388 municipal guards will be responsible for monitoring and inspecting traffic. To do this, they will have 134 vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, and 21 trailers.

Municipal guards will also be responsible for implementing blockades in the leisure area, monitoring the parking ban on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, and inspecting and monitoring subway stations.

Urban planning

In terms of urban planning actions, there will be more than 60 Municipal Guard stations on the waterfront and access roads in the Copacabana neighborhood, with special attention to blocking and support points around the medical stations set up by the Municipal Health Department.

Seop will also have eight support bases in the Copacabana neighborhood. The secretariat's team will prevent illegally parked street vendors and cars, to provide greater fluidity on the neighborhood's streets and sidewalks, inspect street vendors fixed to the sand strips, prevent the sale of drinks in glass bottles, remove pirated vehicles, inspect taxis, provide assistance to homeless people, in addition to maintaining order and safety for passengers on BRT trips to the beaches.

“The focus of the actions will be urban planning and also assistance to police forces in prevention and security. (…) It is very important for us to be able to have the circulation area preserved and for us to have parties throughout the city, safely and with public order”, highlighted the Secretary of Public Order, Brenno Carnevale.

As in previous editions, the Mobile Command and Control Center will have access to the GM-Rio Operational Map and will monitor the location of each agent in real time, providing greater agility in the detection and coercion of crimes.

The operation will also include agents from the Dog Operations Group (GOC).

Five operational tents will also be set up, two in Leme and three in Copacabana to support the Beach Operations Subgroup (SGOP) that will carry out patrols on the sand strip.

“Our teams will be present at various points along the waterfront and at access points to the neighborhood, making them easy to identify for citizens who need assistance,” stated Inspector General José Ricardo Soares, commander of GM-Rio.
