At least 153 children have been killed in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began five weeks ago, and more than 245 children were injured, the country’s attorney general’s office said in a press release on Friday.
Bombings also damaged 859 educational institutions, including 83 that were “completely destroyed,” according to the press release.
The Ukrainian attorney general’s office said it was still working to establish the total number of child victims in Mariupol, as well as in some areas of Kiev, Chernihiv and Luhansk regions.
The UN children’s fund, Unicef, reported that 1.5 million children had fled the country because of the war. The agency warns of the risk of human trafficking, especially for children who flee the country alone, as revealed by the spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Luiz Fernando Godinho.
“We are very attentive to children who are unaccompanied, children who are not of legal age, because they are a very clear target for organizations that carry out human trafficking, organ trafficking”, he said.
Unicef has called for attention and cooperation from Ukraine’s neighboring countries to the risks that more than 7.5 million children are exposed to, from illness to orphanhood.
