More than 150 students developed cancer after being exposed to toxic substances at a university

An uproar has erupted in the US, as more than 150 students at the University of North Carolina have been diagnosed with various types of cancer after being exposed to toxic substances. The Daily Mail reports the Poe Hall building contained lecture and teaching rooms that were made of toxic chemical materials. Thus, at least 152 students were diagnosed with lymphoma or thyroid cancer, with some losing their lives. The authorities therefore put a “lock” on the building in November 2023 amid reports of exposure of students and staff to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In fact, initial investigations found that in at least five rooms, PCB levels linked to cancer were 38 times higher than the limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since then, the University has faced lawsuits while investigations are underway to determine how many people were sickened in total, after some patients have graduated for years.
