More than 160 lightning strikes are recorded in Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul; see video

In Santa Maria, a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul, the Bate-Papo Astronomical observatory recorded more than 160 rays during the first hours of this Friday (15).

The project director explains that the rays are detected by radio frequency, at a distance of up to 40 km from the sensor, installed in the western region of the city.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued an orange warning of storm danger for this Friday (15), in much of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

According to the Institute, in case of gusts of wind, it is not recommended to take shelter under trees, as there is a risk of falling and electrical discharges. Furthermore, Inmet instructs not to park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs.

If possible, the Institute recommends turning off electrical appliances and the general energy supply.
