More than 180 Brazilians asked for refuge in Argentina, which still does not deal with fugitives

At least 181 Brazilians have requested refuge in Argentina since January this year, according to the National Commission for Refugees (Conare), the country’s body responsible for granting political asylum. Until the end of September, all requests were still being analyzed.

The total number of Brazilians requesting refuge in the country until the end of September was obtained this Wednesday (16) through a request for access to public information carried out by the newspaper Tiempo Argentino. THE CNN had access to the document, sent to the vehicle by Conare’s executive secretary.

According to the document, the majority of asylum requests by people of Brazilian nationality were made in May, June and July, with 47, 41 and 37 requests respectively.

THE CNN found that some of those wanted by the courts for the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers of 8/1 who fled Brazil also requested refuge in Argentina for family members who are with them in the country. Many fugitives claim to have been unfairly arrested and that there is arbitrariness in judicial decisions, without individualization of the processes.

On Tuesday, Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the extradition of 63 Brazilians investigated for the January 8 attacks and who fled to Argentina.

Since this Wednesday morning, the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires has received almost 40 extradition requests for the fugitives. Requests will be processed and sent to the Argentine Chancellery.

Despite the move towards extradition, as long as asylum requests are not accepted or rejected by Conare in Argentina, asylum seekers cannot be arrested or sent back to Brazil. Brazilians who have been granted refuge cannot be extradited.
