More than 20 million Brazilians live in homes without internet access according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The new research “Characteristics of Households: Preliminary results of the sample”, released this Thursday (12), analyzes the condition of occupancy of homes from Brazil.
The IBGE points out that 89.4% of the population resides in households with an internet connection, which represents approximately 190 million people . The country has 212.6 million inhabitants, according to the institute’s estimate from August this year.
This means that approximately 22.6 million people do not have internet in their homes. In general, access is proportionally lower in states of North and Northeast region.
Acre is the state with fewer households with internet connection with 75.2%, followed by Amazonas with 77.7% and Pará with 79.4%. They are the only federative units with more than 20% of homes without internet access.
On the other hand, the Federal District leads the country with 96.2% of homes with internet followed by Santa Catarina with 94.8% and São Paulo, with 93.5%.
In all, more states are below the national average 15 of which have less than 89.4% of the population living in households with internet access.
IBGE also lists three main highlights of this Thursday’s survey:
- Internet access exceeds 95% of people in 179 municipalities, with 98 of these in the South region
- Access does not reach 50% in 33 cities, with 32 in the North region
- Among the municipalities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants, the highest proportion was recorded in Balneário Camboriú (SC), with 97.3%, and the lowest was in Breves (PA), with 51.1%.

The institute analyzed conditions in Permanently Occupied Private Households (DPPOs), where people live 99.5% of the population according to IBGE. The sample was based on data from the 2022 Demographic Census.
The conditions of the residences analyzed were: external wall material, number of rooms, number of residents per bedroom, existence of a washing machine and existence of a home Internet connection.
