More than 200 Russian diplomats have been deported from European countries

Romania will deport ten Russian diplomats who do not act in accordance with international rules, the Foreign Ministry announced today, with Bucharest joining several European countries that have deported Russian diplomats in recent days.

More than 200 Russian diplomats have been deported to Europe in the past 48 hours, following rage across the continent and around the world over reports of the discovery of mass graves and the killing of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Butsa following the withdrawal of the Russian army.

“The Romanian authorities have decided to declare ten people working at the Russian embassy in Bucharest as undesirable persons on Romanian territory, as their actions … are contrary to the Vienna Convention,” the ministry said in a statement.

He added that the ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to be informed about the decision.

“The ministry reiterated its unequivocal condemnation of the crimes committed in Bucharest and other Ukrainian cities for which Russia is responsible.”

Moscow has said the images of executed civilians are a forgery of Ukrainian and Western propaganda aimed at discrediting Russia. He denies targeting civilians.

Portugal will also deport 10 members of the Russian embassy in Lisbon, the Portuguese Foreign Ministry announced today, following the reaction of other European Union countries to the “war crimes” under investigation by the Russian army in Ukraine.

A statement from the Portuguese Foreign Ministry said the 10 Russian embassy staffers were described as “personae non gratae” and given two weeks to leave the Iberian country.

None of the deported officials is a diplomat, the statement said.

“The Portuguese government reiterates its strong and resolute condemnation of the Russian attack on Ukrainian territory,” the Portuguese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
