More than 200,000 people left Russia after mobilization warning, data show

More than 200,000 people have traveled from Russia to Georgia, Kazakhstan and the European Union (EU) since Russian President Vladimir Putinannounced the immediate “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens on September 21, official data show.

Here is a breakdown of the numbers:

About 100,000 Russians crossed into Kazakhstan in the last week, Marat Kozheev, the Kazakh deputy minister of internal affairs, said Wednesday, according to Kazinform, a state-run news agency.

At least 53,136 people crossed the Georgian-Russian border between Sept. 21 and Sept. 26, according to data released by Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Tuesday.

Nearly 66,000 Russian citizens entered the European Union last week (September 19-25) — an increase of more than 30% compared to last week, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex said on Tuesday.

More on Putin’s order: the announcement of Russia’s mobilization for war in Ukraine sparked protests and an exodus of Russian citizens from the country, as the Kremlin tightened rules on circumventing military orders.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on September 21 that until 300,000 men with previous military experience will be called up.

The number of Russians fleeing the country to avoid the draft “probably exceeds” the number of troops who invaded Ukraine in February, the UK Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday he did not know the number of people who had left the country since the announcement. Independent Russian media Novaya Gazeta Europe on Tuesday quoted a source in the Russian presidential administration as saying that the FSB (Russia’s Federal Security Service) reported that 261,000 men had fled Russia since the September 21 mobilization announcement.

Russian citizens of Armenia, which would further increase the total number of Russians who have fled the country, including men, women and children, since the announcement of a partial mobilization.
