The Federal Ministry of Health of India announced today (16/5) that in the previous 24 hours 4,077 patients with COVID-19 died, while 311,170 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory.
The official pandemic of the new coronavirus in the giant Asian state has reached 270,284 dead out of a total of 24,684,007 infections as of this stage, notes the APE-MPE.
Many experts, however, point out that the figures released by the government are very underestimated in relation to reality.
This is despite the fact that this week alone, the government has announced more than 24,000 deaths and some 2 million infections.
The number of selected active cases has reached 3.6 million, according to government figures.
As for the immunization campaign, some 182 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine since January 16. On May 1, the government announced that it had begun vaccinating all adults over the age of 18, but in many states this has not happened due to the huge shortage of doses.
Although the health crisis continues, the federal government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi rules out imposing a national lockdown.
However, local governments are taking steps to curb the spread: in West Bengal from today, citizens are restricted in their movement for 14 days.
