More than 30 pigeons appear dead in Copacabana, Rio; Police investigates

Since last Monday (5), more than 30 pigeons have been found dead in Copacabana, in the south of Rio de Janeiro. The situation, which occurred at Shimon Perez Square, near Siqueira Campos do Metro Station, has generated concern among regulars of the region and raised suspicions about the causes of bird deaths.

The Copacabana Residents Association said it is collaborating with the authorities in an attempt to clarify what happened. The Civil Police registered the occurrence at the 12th Police Station (Copacabana) and has already begun investigations.

According to the Municipal Secretariat of Animal Protection and Defense, two pigeon bodies were collected at the scene and sent to the Jorge Vatsman Veterinary Medicine Institute in Mangueira, where they will be subjected to necropsy to determine the cause of death.

Investigators also requested images of security cameras in the area to try to identify possible suspicious actions that may have caused the episode.

In a statement, the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) reported that it intensified the cleaning of Shimon Perez Square, with daily sweeping and hydraulic wash actions, as a preventive form of cleaning of public space.
