More than 3,000 cars from besieged Mariupol arrive in Zaporizhzhia

More than 3,000 cars carrying refugees from the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol arrived in Zaporizhzhia, regional administration chief Oleksandr Starukh said on his Telegram channel.

Among those who arrived in the city are 772 children, he said.

On Tuesday, there was a significant increase in the number of cars able to leave Mariupol, which has been bombed by Russian forces since March 1.

The city council has advised residents who wish to leave to travel west along the coast to Mangush and Berdyansk and then continue northwest to Tokmak, Vasylivka and Zaporizhzhia.

Separately, Starukh said Russian forces attacked two sites in Zaporizhzhia, including the city’s railway station. He said these were the first civilian sites to be hit in the city, but there were no reports of casualties.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk also said in a video speech that Russian forces were in control of a hospital they captured on Tuesday in Mariupol, and that 400 staff and patients were being held hostage.

Russian troops opened fire from artillery positions on the hospital grounds, she said. Reuters was unable to immediately verify the information.
