Ukrainian researchers claim to have confirmed the death of almost 25,000 soldiers since its inception Russian invasion in February 2022estimating that the losses of the Ukrainian armed forces exceed a total of 30,0000.
Kiev does not publicize the casualties of the Ukrainian armed forces, believing that publicizing such data would harm its fight against the Russian invaders. According to a New York Times report in August, American officials estimated that almost 70,000 were the dead Ukrainian soldiers.
Historian Yaroslav Tinchenko and volunteer Herman Shapovalenko report in the Ukrainian magazine Tyzhden that at least 24,500 Ukrainian soldiers have been independently confirmed dead. They point out that the real tally is higher, since many of the 15,000 missing are probably dead, as reported by APE-MPE.
“Obviously, the names of 24,500 dead soldiers are not the true tally, but in our estimation the number represents at least 70% of lossesof the Ukrainian armed forces, they wrote, estimating that more than 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of the Russian invasion. At a ratio of 1:3, the authors estimate that nearly 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been injured on the battlefields.
The Reuters news agency emphasizes that it is unable to verify this account. A spokesman for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry told Reuters he could not comment on the matter.
The authors of the article in the Tyzhden magazine underline that they felt it was important to publicize this data in order to offset conflicting assessments that have been published from time to time in various media and – in their view – do not represent reality.
