A joint statement issued this Thursday (12) by 41 member countries of the United Nations (UN) requests the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE) to immediately publish the results of all electoral records and allow the verification of the data to promote the credibility of the July 28 election process.
“We take note of the preliminary report of the United Nations Panel of Experts, which concluded that the electoral process fell short of the ‘basic measures of transparency and integrity’ that are essential for the holding of credible elections,” read Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez Acha, representing the member states that issued the appeal on Thursday.
THE CNN contacted CNE for comment.
The UN panel that was in Venezuela between the end of June and August 2 published a preliminary report criticizing the country’s electoral process, in which the CNE declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the elections without showing the results broken down by polling station and center. The Venezuelan government rejected the opinion issued by the panel at that time, considering that “it is nothing more than an act of propaganda that serves the coup interests of the Venezuelan extreme right.”
Thursday’s statement also applauds the Venezuelan people for participating in the elections despite significant challenges and demands that their decision be respected, after more than 80% of the minutes published by the opposition showed a different result than that announced by the CNE and validated by the Supreme Court.
Regarding the departure of candidate Edmundo González to Spain, the States that signed the appeal state that it was in response to the political arrest order issued by the Venezuelan authorities that González was “forced into exile”.
