More than 400 cities last had rain in April, points out Cemaden

Data from the National Center for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (Cemaden) show that 421 Brazilian cities recorded the last rain in April this year.

Most of these municipalities, there are at least 146 days without rain, is from the state of Goiás, which accounts for around 45% of the total. Next are Minas Gerais (40%) and Bahia, with less than 6%.

Mato Grosso has 20 cities in this drought condition, ahead of Tocantins (11) and São Paulo (6). In addition to these, Piauí (2) and the Federal District, with Brasília, are also on the list.

  • Goiás – 188 cities
  • Minas Gerais – 169
  • Bahia – 24
  • Mato Grosso – 20
  • Tocantins – 11
  • São Paulo – 6
  • Piauí – 2
  • Federal District – 1

The survey also shows that more than 2 thousand municipalities have been without rain for at least two months. The organization understands that Brazil is facing the biggest drought in recent decades. The data was compiled until Sunday (22).

“Unfortunately, projections for the coming weeks are not optimistic. At least until mid-October, the forecast for the Center-North of the country is for the current scenario to worsen”, says Ana Paula Cunha, researcher at Cemaden.

The 23 cities without rain for the longest time are in Minas Gerais, all of which have not recorded rain for more than five months. Nine of them are at the top of the ranking, with 166 days without rain :

  • Catuti Nova (MG)
  • Porteirinha (MG)
  • Pai Pedro (MG)
  • Verdelândia (MG)
  • São João da Ponte (MG)
  • Janaúba (MG)
  • Ibiracatu (MG)
  • Porteirinha (MG)
  • Itacarambi (MG)

Cemaden highlights that climate change, which warms the atmosphere, tends to produce longer sequences of days without rain. Another factor for the drought is the land use changes .

When replacing forest areas with areas dedicated to agriculture or pastures, the degradation of the moisture source, both air and soil, reduces environmental humidity and, consequently, reduces precipitation.
