More than 400 forest fires have been fought in the last two months in Bahia

Since July, members of the Bahia Fire Department have been employed in Operation Florestal 2024.

Since then, 422 fires have been extinguished in environmental areas. The corporation explained that the month of September is a critical period, with a greater possibility of occurrences and therefore the fight against them has been reinforced.

Divided into five Forest Bases, the teams fight fires in forest areas to preserve fauna and flora. In addition to fighting fires, 720 preventive guidelines were also provided to the population.

The teams are employed in the cities of Muquém do São Francisco, Luís Eduardo Magalhães and Barreiras (West Base), Juazeiro, Casa Nova and Campo Alegre de Lourdes (North Base), Lençóis (Chapa Base), Santa Maria da Vitória, Riacho de Santana, Paratinga, Cocos and Bom Jesus da Lapa (Lapa Base) and in Vitória da Conquista (Southwest Base).

According to the Fire Department, professionals use the Federal Government’s Fire Panel Platform to monitor areas of the state with the greatest heat and risk of forest fires.

It is worth noting that perpetrators of environmental crimes may be held liable under Law 9,605/98. Intentional bonfires and burning of garbage or pastures, and even the incorrect disposal of cigarettes, can cause fires in forested areas.
