More than 400 immigrants arrived in the Canary Islands on Tuesday (21), according to figures provided by the Spanish Red Cross and local authorities.
The Spanish coast guard towed a wooden boat carrying 67 men, two women and a child to the port of Arguineguin in Gran Canaria late at night.
Local police counted the migrants as they disembarked.
Five other boats arrived off the coast of El Hierro carrying at least 350 migrants, according to the Spanish Red Cross.
The seven Spanish islands off the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa are struggling to absorb a surge in irregular migrants, mainly from Mali, Senegal and Morocco.
The Spanish archipelago reached a historic annual high for the second year in a row with 46,843 arrivals in 2024, constituting 73% of irregular immigration to Spain, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior.
