“More than 40,000 Syrians are being recruited by Russia to fight in Ukraine”

Ready to deploy in Ukraine seem to be its fighters Syrian army and its allied militias with Russia has compiled lists of 40,000 fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday (15/3).

The Kremlin announced on March 11 that volunteers, including those arriving from Syria, were welcome to fight alongside the Russian army in Ukraine, which was invaded by the Russian army on February 24.

According to the Observatory, Russian officers, in coordination with the Syrian army and its allied militias, have opened conscription offices in the areas controlled by the Damascus regime, APE-MPE reports.

“More than 40,000 Syrians have so far registered to fight on Russia’s side in Ukraine.” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based non-governmental organization with an extensive network of sources in Syria.

Russian officials deployed to Syria as part of Moscow’s 2015 intervention in support of the Damascus regime have approved 22,000 of them, according to Abdel Rahman.

These fighters have been trained by the Russians

The fighters come either from regular Syrian army units or from pro-government militia classes trained by the Russians and experienced in urban battles, according to the Observatory.

In a country where soldiers earn between 13 and 32 euros a month, Russia promises them a salary of $ 1,100 (1,000 euros) to fight in Ukraine, the Observatory reports.

They are also entitled to $ 7,700 in compensation in the event of injury, while their family will receive $ 16,500 in the event of their death in battle, according to the same source.

Others at least 18,000 fighters will be led by Cloudy Wagner, a Russian private paramilitary company with ties to the Kremlin, the Observatory said, adding that it had not yet seen any Syrian troops leave for Ukraine.

A spokesman for the Syrian government has denied the allegations.

“So far, no name has been registered, no soldiers have been registered and no one has gone to Russia to fight in Ukraine,” Omar Rahmoun of the National Reconciliation Commission told AFP.

Syrian mercenaries have already fought in Libya and in the Caucasian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
