The Peruvian Ministry of Defense reported that 5,600 Armed Forces personnel were called up to reinforce security on the main streets and avenues of Lima and El Callao. Both cities are under a state of emergency.
The ministry issued a statement on Thursday (28) indicating that the government “ordered the Central Operational Command, the Maritime Operational Command and the Air Operational Command to use operational capabilities and human resources to enhance security actions”.
The statement indicates that the military will carry out surveillance, patrol and identity control tasks, with the aim of locating people wanted by the courts.
On Tuesday (26), the Peruvian government extended the state of emergency declared on September 27 for 45 days. The measure, which implies that the Armed Forces support the police in maintaining order, was taken to combat crime.
