More than 50 million cases of coronavirus in Europe

More than 50 million people have been infected with Covid-19 in Europe since the virus appeared in China in December 2019, according to a count of the French Agency based on data provided by the authorities, today at 20.15 Greek time.

Overall, they have been recorded 50,021,615 cases in the 52 countries and territories of the region, extending eastward to Azerbaijan and Russia, of which more than 1,382,000 in the last seven days, or an average of 197,400 per day.

A slowdown in the epidemic is observed in most European countries, which are carefully easing the restrictions they have put in place to stem the last outbreak of the epidemic: the daily number of new cases has been falling for the past two weeks.

From 12 April, Britain has begun a major phase of easing, after three months of lockdown, with the reopening of stores that do not sell basic necessities and the opening of outdoor spaces.

The country records an average of more than 2,300 new cases of coronavirus each day, thanks to quarantine and a mass vaccination campaign launched in early December that allowed at least one vaccine to be given to 64% of the adult population.

On Monday, Italy followed: bars, restaurants, cinemas and theaters partially opened. Following a peak of nearly 23,000 daily infections in late March, the country has an average of less than 13,000 daily cases.

In France, the worst-hit European country with a total number of reported cases (5,565,852), there is a slight reduction in the number of new infections. Earlier this week, the country fell below the still high threshold of 30,000 new daily cases.

On the contrary, some countries are fighting to reduce the epidemic. Cyprus last week recorded 651 new daily cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest rate in the world, according to data compiled by Agence France-Presse. The Mediterranean island announced a new two-week quarantine on Friday.

Europe accounts for one third of the total number of coronavirus infections worldwide (148,820,944), but only 24% of the new cases reported last week.

More than 1,060,900 deaths have been recorded in the area since the outbreak began, of which nearly 3,600 a day during this period, a number that also declines slightly after mid-April.
