More than 5,000 Ukrainians have contacted the Jewish Agency to immigrate to Israel

More than 5,000 Ukrainians have contacted the Jewish Agency for Israel to immigrate to the country, the group said today, which has set up a special call center following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to the call center, the Jewish Agency has set up six offices in countries bordering Ukraine (Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary) where Ukrainians wishing to immigrate to Israel can apply, a spokeswoman said.

These offices are expected to be able to manage “the immediate waves of migration expected due to the war in Ukraine,” the Jewish Agency, which was established in 1929 to facilitate the migration of Jews to Israel, said in a statement on Sunday.

He also pointed out that they are ready to open other offices, “if deemed necessary”.

All Jews, as well as their children, grandchildren and spouses, can, under the “return law”, go to Israel and automatically acquire Israeli citizenship.

About 2,000 Israelis have fled Ukraine since Russia began its invasion on Thursday, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which estimates that 6,000 remain in the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced Sunday that his country is sending 100 tonnes of aid – medicines, tents, blankets and more – to Ukrainian civilians.

After speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, Bennett also spoke by telephone with Vladimir Putin, one of the few times the Russian president has spoken to a foreign leader since invading Ukraine.
