More than 64 million hard drives with a total volume of 288 EB were shipped in the last quarter

The source cited new data from a report by analyst firm Trendfocus relating to the hard disk drive market in the first quarter of 2021.

The updated figures by manufacturer are very close to the preliminary figures that were released in April. In short, Segate shipped 27.54 million HDDs, giving it a 42.9% market share. In second place is WDC, which shipped 23.09 million HDDs, which corresponds to 36.0% of the market. Toshiba closes the top three. It shipped 13.54 million drives and took the remaining 21.1% of the market.

It is noteworthy that the 8.4% reduction in supplies as compared to the previous quarter did not prevent them from setting a record in terms of total information volume. In total, 64.17 million hard drives with a total volume of 288.28 EB were shipped during the quarter.

Of these, 19.25 million HDDs with a total volume of 197.16 EB belong to the corporate segment. This is the only segment that has shown growth not only in volume, but also in the number of drives. Enterprise hard drive shipments were up 19.3% in the quarter.

Desktop drives shipped 14.79 million units, down 8.8% qoq. This segment is equal to 23.0% of the market. The total volume of these drives is 31.56 EB.

Approximately the same amount – 31.98 EB – would fit on all mobile hard drives released during the quarter. However, the number of mobile models is higher – 20.18 million units. Moreover, this indicator for the quarter decreased by 15.2%. Mobile HDDs accounted for 31.4% of shipments.

Finally, 9.95 million units were shipped for consumer electronics, which is 28.6% less than in the previous quarter. Their total volume is 27.78 EB. This is the smallest segment of the market. It is equal to 15.5%.
