More than 6,500 civilians have died since the start of the war in Ukraine

At least 6,595 Ukrainian civilians have died and 10,189 have been injured since Russia invaded the country in February, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Among the dead were at least 415 children, 2,575 men, 1,767 women and 1,838 other adults whose gender has yet to be identified, according to data released on Monday (21).

Many of the civilian deaths occurred in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Donbass – an eastern region at the heart of the war that has seen the heaviest fighting in recent months.

The UN body’s report said 3,939 civilians were killed and 5,338 others were wounded in Donetsk and Luhansk, including 449 in Russian-controlled territory.

The commission said the actual numbers are “considerably higher” due to lack or delay of information in areas where conflict has intensified, including in cities such as Mariupol, Izium, Lysychansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk.

Most of the recorded deaths were a result of explosive weapons with long-range effects, such as heavy artillery bombardment, multiple rocket launch systems, missiles and air strikes, the report added.
