More than 6,600 people passed through humanitarian corridors this Saturday, says Ukraine

At least 6,623 people passed through humanitarian corridors in besieged Ukrainian cities on Saturday, according to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a senior official in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office.

Tymoshenko said 4,128 people, including 1,172 children, were evacuated from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia.

In the Kiev region, 1,820 people were evacuated from smaller cities – including Bucha, Bilohorodka, Piskivka and Horenychi – and transported to the Ukrainian capital, he said.

In addition, 675 people were reportedly evacuated from the Luhansk region, according to Tymoshenko.

refugee children

According to data from the United Nations children’s agency Unicef, around 1.5 million children have fled Ukraine since the start of the war against Russia. The entity also warns of the risk of child trafficking in view of the large contingent.

“The war in Ukraine is leading to mass displacement and refugee flows – conditions that could lead to a significant increase in human trafficking and an acute child protection crisis,” said Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia.

Between 24 February and 7 March, UNICEF said it had identified more than 500 unaccompanied children crossing the border from Ukraine into Romania.
