More than 700 suspects remain in custody after Sunday’s riots in Brazil

Over seven hundred suspects are still in custody following the fan attack of far-right ex-president Jáich Bolsonaro at the headquarters of the three powers in Brazil’s capital on Sunday, as authorities stepped up security measures to prevent further unrest.

The former president’s thousands of supporters, who attacked and destroyed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brasilia, are refusing to acknowledge Mr Bolsonaro’s electoral defeat in October’s election, when he faced centre-left President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. .

They are supporters of the former president who were either arrested immediately after the riots at the seats of the three branches of power, legislative, judicial and executive, or taken into custody when a camp of far-right supporters was broken up in front of the headquarters of the armed forces in Brasilia on Tuesday.

It is not entirely clear whether this list includes everyone who remains in custody.

Police arrested at least 1,500 people, several hundred during and immediately after the riotsas well as about 1,200 in the camp, who were taken to police stations for verification.
