More than 90% of pets do not have health insurance in Brazil, says Quaest survey

A study by Quaest released this week reveals that 92% of Brazilians do not have health insurance for their pets. Of the total number of pets in the country, almost half (47%) are dogs.

Among those who do not have a pet insurance plan, seven out of ten Brazilians would like to have the service. This is because the costs of medical treatments for animals can be high and insurance can be more affordable.

The study shows that 50% of owners have stopped performing medical procedures on their pets due to lack of money and, for 64% of them, this has happened more than once.

Still on the subject of health care, 19% of owners who earn up to two minimum wages (R$2,824) have never taken their pets to the vet. However, among those who earn more than five minimum wages (R$7,060), only 4% have never taken their pets to the vet.

Pets in the family

Brazil is the third country in the world with the most pets, with 149 million, behind only China and the United States. Of all Brazilians, 94% have had a pet.

Among the main reasons for people who do not have animals are lack of space at home (20%), lack of money (16%) and lack of personal health to care for the animal (16%).

On the other hand, 30% of people who don’t have a pet would like to have one.

Pet expenses

Almost all owners say that having a pet requires a lot of responsibility. The most common expense is buying food (96%), followed by treats (77%) and bathing (64%).

Regarding individual expenses of pet owners, 55% spend up to R$300 per month. However, 10% of owners spend more than R$1,000 per month on their pets.

The survey also shows that 96% of Brazilians believe that someone who mistreats an animal is a bad person. At the same time, more than 90% of the population considers that animal protection laws and public veterinary services in Brazil are insufficient.

The survey was conducted between June 17 and 20 with Brazilians aged 16 or over. 1,001 interviews were conducted using an online questionnaire. The survey has a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 3.1.
