More than 90,000 people have recently been displaced in Lebanon, says UN

More than 90,000 people have recently been displaced in Lebanon, the United Nations said on Wednesday (25).

The UN added that the “exodus of people from southern Lebanon to the north of the Litani River” amid Israel’s large-scale air campaign continued on Wednesday.

“At least 90,530 newly displaced people have been reported, including nearly 40,000 in 283 shelters,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Some of these people will “likely” include those who have fled their homes since Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fire following Hamas’ October 7 attacks in southern Israel last year.

Israel expanded the areas in Lebanon it has been attacking since Tuesday night (24), with strikes for the first time in the beach resort of Jiyyeh, south of Beirut.

It also attacked Bint Jbeil, Tebnin and Ain Qana in the south, the village of Joun in the Chouf district to the south, near Sidon, and Maaysrah in the Keserwan district to the north.

The Lebanese Foreign Minister said that around half a million people may have been displaced in Lebanon.

In Beirut, thousands of people displaced from southern Lebanon were sheltering in schools and other buildings.

More than 60 people were evacuated from the Christian town of Alma Chaab along the border after overnight attacks.

“At least two houses were completely destroyed, but fortunately they were empty and there were no casualties,” said Milad Eid, a resident.

Israeli officials said the Galilee region in northern Israel was hit by heavy barrages from Hezbollah on Wednesday morning.

In the Israeli city of Safed, an assisted living facility was hit but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Near-daily exchanges of fire in the Israel-Lebanon border area began after war broke out last October between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, on Israel’s southern border.
