In Brazil, 1094 cities have been at least 100 days without rain according to a survey by the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden), linked to the Federal Government.
The data also shows that more than 2,000 municipalities have been without rain for at least two months. The agency understands that Brazil is facing the worst drought in decades . “Unfortunately, the projections for the coming weeks are not optimistic. At least until mid-October, the forecast for the Center-North of the country is for things to get worse. of the current scenario”, says Ana Paula Cunha, researcher at Cemaden.
The 23 cities that have had the longest period of time without rain are all in Minas Gerais. there has been no rainfall for more than five months . Nine of them are at the top of the ranking, with 166 days without rain:
- Catuti Nova (MG)
- Porteirinha (MG)
- Father Pedro (MG)
- Greenland (MG)
- St. John of the Bridge (MG)
- Janauba (MG)
- Ibiracatu (MG)
- Porteirinha (MG)
- Itacarambi (MG)
The Central-West, part of the Southeast and Northeast regions are the most affected by water deficit . Among the cities that have gone more than 100 days without rain, more than 30% are in Minas Gerais. Next are Goiás (22%), Mato Grosso (12%), Tocantins (7%) and Bahia (7%). In total, twelve states are home to the municipalities.
Cemaden highlights that climate change, which warms the atmosphere, tends to produce longer sequences of days without rain. Another factor for drought is land use changes . By replacing forest areas with areas dedicated to agriculture or pasture, the degradation of the moisture source, both in the air and in the soil, reduces the humidity of the environment and, consequently, reduces precipitation.
