More than half of Brazilians are concerned about mental health, survey shows

In Brazil, more than half of the population sees mental health as the country’s main problem in terms of well-being.

The data is contained in an exclusive survey carried out by Ipsos, which mapped well-being problems in several countries around the world. The survey also points out that concern about the topic has grown over the last few years.

  • In 2018, the first year that Ipsos carried out monitoring, 18% of respondents mentioned mental health as a topic of greatest concern.
  • In 2023, in the most recent assessment, this percentage rose to 52%.

Cancer is the second biggest health concern cited by Brazilians, with 38%, followed by drug abuse, with 36%.

Access to healthcare

The survey also asked Brazilians about the country’s healthcare system.

The data shows that 31% of those interviewed classify the health system as “good”. The value is below the global average, which is 48%.

The three countries that most approve their healthcare systems are:

  • Singapore (71%),
  • Switzerland (68%),
  • and Malaysia (66%).

Regarding the health network’s service capacity, around seven in ten Brazilians (74%) say that the system is overloaded. The number represents an increase of seven percentage points compared to 2022 (67%).

Respondents were also asked about accessibility to medical care. Brazil is a leader in the difficulty of accessing quality healthcare: 83% of Brazilians believe that many people cannot afford good healthcare.

The “Global Health Service Monitor 2023” survey, carried out by the Ipsos Institute, interviewed 23,274 people, 1,000 from Brazil.
