The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, revealed in an interview with CNN Brazil an alarming scenario regarding the fires that hit the country. According to the minister, Brazil is currently facing 931 fires throughout the national territory, with 58% of the country in a drought situation, with a third of this percentage in extreme conditions.
Marina Silva highlighted the government’s efforts to fight the flames: “With the effort that has been intensified every day, we have already managed to extinguish 479 fires”. However, the situation remains critical, with 261 outbreaks still in combat and more than 100 in areas that are difficult to access, with no possibility of immediate intervention.
Total prohibition and criminal actions
The minister emphasized the total ban on the use of fire throughout the national territory, due to the current high risk. “Fire is prohibited, anyone who uses fire is committing a criminal action,” said Marina, warning of the seriousness of the actions of individuals who set fires illegally.
Silva specifically denounced criminal practices in sensitive areas: “It is a war that is being waged and that needs to be waged even at the level of those who criminally practice the action of setting fire to productive areas, within indigenous land conservation units.”
The situation demands increased attention from authorities and the population, especially considering that more than half of the country is facing drought conditions. The federal government, through the Ministry of the Environment, continues to mobilize resources to fight fires and prevent new outbreaks, in an effort to protect Brazil’s environmental heritage.
