More than six tons of fish and meat are seized in the public market

An operation coordinated by the Public Prosecution Service of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) seized 6.2 tons of fish and meat inappropriate for consumption in the public market of the state capital, on Monday (14).

According to the agency, 2.6 tons of fish were seized inside a truck and another 100 pounds in two fishfish in the market.

The main irregularities verified were inadequate temperature, poor hygiene conditions and products without origin. In the other six fishfish on the market, no problems were encountered.

The truck was seized and the driver taken to the police station. He and the vehicle owner will be responsible for crime against consumer relations.

In one of the cold chambers surveyed, the agents seized 3.5 tons of beef and pork with expired validity, without origin and without health inspection.

Prosecutor Alcindo Luz Bastos da Silva Filho, from the Porto Alegre Consumer Prosecutor’s Office, stressed that “at this time of Easter, when the consumption of fish increases, it is essential that we verify the conditions of the products, considering aspects such as transportation, temperature, origin and validity. As it is a highly perishable product, we have the role of preventing and protecting the health of consumers.”

The seized products have been unused and samples will be sent to the laboratory to verify that the fish are prohibited sales.

In all, 120 agents participated in the integrated operation that began at 5am.
