Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro meant that 3,400 people had to leave their homes. The state remains on red alert due to the risk of storms, which can cause landslides on slopes, flooding and river overflows, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). In all, there are 2,900 homeless and more than 500 homeless.
So far, the municipalities of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, Natividade, Trajano de Moraes and Cachoeiras de Macacu have declared a State of Emergency. Other cities are evaluating the damage caused by the rains and, with the recognition of this situation, they will be able to count on financial help from the federal government.
In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, 70 properties that presented some type of risk were interdicted. Residents went to the house of relatives or referred to Social Assistance. In addition, 17 sirens were sounded in 11 communities to warn of storms.
In these places, the amount of rain exceeded the limit of 40 millimeters. The highest accumulated was in Complexo do Alemão, with 64 millimeters.
According to the Rio City Hall Operations Center, the municipality is in a state of attention, which is the third level on a scale of five. The forecast is for heavy rain throughout the night of this Tuesday (11), with the possibility of flooding.
In Teresópolis, in the Serrana Region, a car was hit by a landslide and left two people slightly injured. The accident happened in Vale da Revolta, at kilometer 84 of the Rio-Bahia Highway (BR-116/RJ), on Monday night (10). The victims were treated by firefighters and released.
Civil Defense technicians are on site assessing the conditions in the stretch and the road remains completely closed. Traffic was diverted by the Federal Highway Police, and there is still no release date.
The areas on the border with Minas Gerais are still under consideration due to the overflow of the Muriaé River in the municipalities of Patrocínio do Muriaé (MG), Carangola (MG), Porciúncula (RJ) and Cardoso Moreira (RJ). The Pomba and Itabapoana rivers also overflowed.
In the mountain region, in the watershed of the Dois Rios river, there was a record of an overflow in the early hours of this Tuesday (11).
