A well 32 meters deep and 25 centimeters wide. Here he met death little Rayan. To get it out a tunnel was built, almost opened a mountain, but there was nothing to do: the 5-year-old did not survive.
It was hoped until the last. He prayed for days to the crowd that attended the rescue, but the miracle did not occur in an event that recalls that of Alfredino Rampi, which fell on 10 June 1981 in an artesian well near Fiumicino. Once again a tragic ending.
Rayan had gone off to play, near the village of Ighrane, in the Rif, a mountainous area in the north of Morocco. At one point he disappeared. The father, who was fixing the well, never saw him again and the alarm was raised. It was 5pm Tuesday February 1. from that moment the rescue car left and worked until Saturday evening to try to reach the baby.
They went on for four days and four nights digging a parallel well and then moving horizontally across the mountain, a job done a few inches at a time to avoid collapsing. As always in these cases the fight against time was unequal. The baby was taken out wrapped in a yellow sheetthe parents were taken into the ambulance bound for the helicopter which never left.
The official end to hopes comes from a statement from the Royal House of Morocco: “Rayan died of his injuries during the fall”. Everyone was hoping, but the hopes were low and uncertain for the rescuers who were unable to determine the condition of the child. Abdelhadi Temrani, in charge of the rescue, explained it: «We don’t know if he took the water and the oxygen mask that we sent him down. But we pray to God that he is alive ».
The volunteer who had lowered himself into the well and reached twenty feet from Rayan had heard him cry and breathe on Thursday. No other certainty or news. The images from the camera dropped down to him showed him lying on his side. So they found him, but there was nothing they could do: Rayan was now dead.
