Morocco is in talks with Spaniards and other gas traders to secure medium-term supply deals as part of its strategy to become dependent on coal.
“We want to gain access to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and ensure diversification and security of supply,” said Energy Minister Leila Benali in an interview with the Al Attiyah Foundation in Qatar, which was posted on her YouTube channel. Sunday.
Morocco mainly covered its natural gas needs – about 1 billion cubic meters per year – in the pipeline that supplied gas from Algeria to Spain, until Algeria ceased operations last October.
A Moroccan energy source told Reuters in October that the country planned to reverse the decommissioned pipeline to import gas from Spain’s LNG terminals to power two small power plants in northern Morocco.
At the same time, Morocco submitted an offer in March for the acquisition of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which it plans to install in the port of Mohammedia.
However, the country’s energy minister stressed that the government is also considering building a land-based regasification terminal, as it seeks to boost gas infrastructure and boost demand.
He added that demand for gas is expected to increase to 3 billion cubic meters by 2040, as the country intensifies its efforts to switch to low-carbon fuels.
He also added that the percentage of installed capacity from renewable energy sources increased to 45% last year and is expected to exceed 52% by 2025, as the construction of RES projects with a capacity of 10 GW is planned in the coming years.
“The private sector is interested in Moroccan offshore wind energy with the aim of exporting electricity to Europe,” Benali said.
